Reinstallation of African Art Galleries Now Complete
We are excited to announce the completion of a yearlong reinstallation of a portion of our African art galleries. Breaking from a thematic arrangement of objects, the new displays now focus in on distinct African cultural zones, highlighting masterpieces from the collection by some of the continent’s most celebrated artists, alongside new acquisitions and rarely shown works of art in a variety of different media. |
This view (above) highlights our display dedicated to the Christian art of Ethiopia and reflects the variety and dynamism of this tradition. Processional crosses dating from the 13th to the 19th centuries are presented beneath The Queen of Sheba with King Solomon and Tribute Bearers, a mid-twentieth century painting produced by artists in a collaborative workshop. The painting was recently conserved and is on view for the first time since it was donated in 2005 by Nina M. Griggs in memory of N. Lee Griggs, Jr., B.A. 1951. |
