Gallery Enters Phase 2

The Gallery has not yet reopened to the public, but we are entering Phase 2 of Yale’s reactivation with a small group of staff back working with the collection. Also this week, the Gallery’s cafe tables are back on Chapel Street.

When Olive Oil Was Gold

While we await the start of the postponed 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, we can learn about another contest—the Panathenaic Games—held in ancient Greece every four years in honor of Athena and featuring athletic and musical competitions.

Finds from Yale’s Excavations

Learn more about the Gallery’s collection of over 13,000 objects from the ancient Mediterranean world. The collection includes important finds from Yale University’s excavations in the 1920s and 1930s at Gerasa (now Jerash, Jordan) and Dura-Europos(in present-day Syria), such as this Roman legionary shield, or scutum (right), the only known surviving example of its type.
