Animal Caretaker/Environmental Educator

Overview of Duties/Responsibilities include:
Animal Care: As Lead Animal Keeper you will be responsible for overseeing and providing thorough care to native non- releasable animals in Outdoor Wildlife Complex including hawks, owls, falcons, a fox and more; as well as reptiles and animals that reside in the Nature Center and greenhouse. Care includes feeding, sanitation, enrichment, cage maintenance, handling, ordering food, monitoring health and scheduling vet appointments as needed; researching best diets and care for new species that reside. Communicate with staff and volunteers on proper care. Maintain animal permits.
Education: Teach nature related programs to children and adults, both onsite and offsite; create lesson plans; educate visitors; lead interpretive walks.
Training/Supervising: Train Interns and occasional volunteers in proper animal care and other projects.
Maintenance: Help maintain Refuge trails and habitats. General maintenance/cleaning of Nature Center. Animal Keeper responsible for maintaining cleanliness of all animal care areas.
General: Perform related functions as required to support the organization’s mission and operations.
Work Schedule and Compensation: The position is full-time, salary based on experience, and includes benefits after 60 days. Candidate must be able to work flexible hours including weekends, and some evenings for events and programs.
Qualifications: Ideal candidate will have minimum 1- 2 years hands on experience with wildlife including raptors. College degree with specialization in the natural sciences, environmental education, or zoology. One year experience teaching environmental education programs and able to comfortably speak before large and small groups, as well as virtual programming. Must be able to interact effectively and sensitively with individuals of all ages and abilities. Must be in good physical condition, able to lift 50 lbs, and able to work outdoors year-round. Able to work independently and as part of a team. Establish and maintain positive professional relationships with those contacted in the course of work including co-workers, volunteers, and the public. Clean driver’s license and background check.
