This summer the Montauk Oceans Institute, located at the Montauk Lighthouse in Montauk, NY has its LAWS NOT JAWS: Why Our Oceans Need Sharks exhibition.
This Sunday, August 11, at 7pm, the Institute will present MONTAUK SHARKS, a new film by by Tom Garber of Third Wave Films.
This 17-minute film, MONTAUK SHARKS follows the evolution of the public’s perception of sharks as a human predator to that of an endangered species that needs protection. At the core of the story is Frank Mundus, who popularized shark fishing and inspired “Jaws”, and then became the first public figure decrying the needless killing of sharks. Montauk, the birthplace of shark fishing, also became the birthplace of shark conservation.
This gripping short film shows both the history and our advancement toward understanding sharks and their crucial impact on the health of the planet as Apex Ocean Predator.
The public is invited to attend cocktail hour from 7-8, followed by the short film, after which there will be a Q&A.
