Montauk Loop (5.5 miles)
We will make a counterclockwise loop around the eastern tip of the South Fork. Starting from the parking lot of the Montauk Point Lighthouse, we will walk west along the Oyster Pond Trail, taking a side trip on the Seal Haulout Trail to look for harbor seals below. (Early March is a good time to spot them.) After skirting the brackish Oyster Pond we will head south, cross Route 27, enter Camp Hero, and walk east back to the lighthouse along the spectacular bluffs. If the weather is OK, we’ll finish by walking on the bed of giant rocks below the lighthouse. Meet at 10 AM in the lower Lighthouse parking lot near the entrance on the left. Duration 2.5 hours, moderate pace. Bring snacks & liquids. Info only, call or text Peter Coy: (201) 790-5725. Email: petercoy@verizon.net

Montauk Mountain Preserve Hike
with the Montauk Library (1 mile)
Join us for a short hike through Montauk Mountain Preserve, one of the few remaining maritime grasslands in New York and a site of significance for the East End during the American Revolutionary War. During the American Revolutionary War, British ships moored off Fort Pond Bay threatened raids on colonists’ cattle grazing Montauk’s grasslands. Hear the story of how Captain John Dayton prevented the raid, take in the first signs of spring, listen to bird song, and learn about the rare plants in this unique maritime grassland. This will be a slow-paced .5-mile loop hike with the option to turn coats inside out and hike a second time in the style of Dayton’s Ruse for a total of 1 mile, duration of one hour. Meet at 10:45 AM at the Montauk Library, 871 Montauk Highway, for a carpool to the trailhead.
RSVP to alusty@montauklibrary.org or 631-668-3377 x104
