The VFW traces its deepest roots to Camp Wikoff. Gen. William Shafter’s Fifth Army Corps, which included Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, were the first American veterans of a war fought overseas on foreign soil — And, troops returned home at Fort Pond Bay, Montauk, in August & September, 1898.
