Two Artists Step Into The Light At Alex Ferrone Gallery

———————–

The “Illumination” exhibition opened this past weekend at Alex Ferrone Gallery in Cutchogue and features a gorgeous selection of art inspired by light by Wendy Prellwitz and Chris Ann Ambery. The Illumination Artist Talks & Reception will be held on Saturday, November 2 with the Talks at 4:00pm (limited seating, reservations required) and the Reception immediately following at 5:30-7:00pm (open to the public). Illumination runs through November 24, 2024.

Nocturne paintings in oils by Wendy Prellwitz reveal the beauty of the moon’s glow reflecting off Peconic Bay and spilling into the artist’s studio. In contrast to evening inspiration, Chris Ann Ambery works with daylight to produce her wet cyanotypes, composing elements of flora and using food spices for serendipitous chemical reactions on the paper.

Prellwitz speaks about rendering light in her work, “Outdoors on a summer’s evening, a huge moon rises over the bay, creating the brightest reflections on the water, and the moon’s path finds me. Indoors, flowing like a welcome visitor through open doors, that flood of light spills in through the windows with surprising patterns of brilliant illumination and inky shadows. Looking out again to the moonlight, from here to there, I sense a connection to the infinite beyond.”

Ambery states, “Informed largely by the natural world and, although, inspired by the landscape, my pieces aren’t renderings of specific places. They are a journey into residual memories and emotions from my experiences within the places I visit. Using elements from my current environments, the wet cyanotype process allows me to work in a spontaneous and expressive manner.”

Having visited & lived there from childhood summers through the present, Prellwitz’s work reflects a deep connection with the water along with the light that illuminates her historic studio.

Ms. Prellwitz continues her 30+ years exhibiting her works in galleries and museums throughout New England, on Long Island, and beyond and has included exhibitions at The Long Island Museum and Nassau County Museum of Art, as well as Alex Ferrone Gallery and East End Arts, all on Long Island, NY; Alpers Fine Art in Rockport, MA; Art Associations in Cambridge and Concord, MA; as well as Cove St Arts in Portland, ME, among others.

Accolades and awards for her work include a fellowship from the Ballinglen Arts Foundation, a grant from the St. Botolf Club, and the Spirit Award from Maud Morgan Arts commemorating her co-founding of the city-wide Cambridge art center. Her works reside in public collections including the Long Island Museum, the Boston Public Library, and The Ballinglen Archive, as well as in several private collections.

Wendy has taught drawing, painting and printmaking and now hosts workshops at her studio in Peconic, continuing the artistic tradition there. She is also an architect, having worked for 40 years primarily at her architectural practice in Cambridge, MA.
