The Museum Director’s Corner
By Gavin Fontanez
As summer approaches, I am thrilled to share updates on two exciting initiatives that celebrate Long Island’s resilience and heritage. First: “Eye of the Storm: Hurricanes and Resilience in Long Island History”– Opening June 4th, 2025 This immersive exhibit will take visitors on a journey through 100 years of storms that have shaped our communities. From the devastating 1938 Long Island Express to Superstorm Sandy, Eye of the Storm blends science, history, and firsthand accounts to honor our region’s ability to endure and rebuild. We Need Your Help! Do you have storm-related artifacts gathering dust in your attic? We’re seeking donations of: • Personal photos, letters, or journals from historic storms (1938, Gloria, Sandy, etc.) • Salvaged items, such as damaged signs, household objects, or recovery memorabilia • Vintage emergency gear (radios, first aid kits, weather instruments) Your contributions will help future generations understand the challenges and triumphs of life on the coast. Contact me directly at fontanez.gavin@gmail.com or contact@whbhistorical.org, or leave a message at (631) 288-1139 to share your stories or artifacts.
Second: Antique & Classic Car Show – On Saturday, September 6th (Rain Date: Sunday, September 7th) Please join us on the Great Lawn at 35 Main Street for a dazzling display of pre-1975 automobiles. Marvel at classics like Studebakers, Packards, Nashes, and Thunderbirds, swap restoration stories with fellow enthusiasts, and enjoy a free day of family-friendly fun! To be part of the show interested participants with old cars should email us at the addresses above. It’ll be a great day of fun to close up the summer!
Please mark your calendars and join us as we honor the past and prepare for tomorrow!
