The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation has awarded more than $1.5 million in grants to cultural organizations this season, including as part of its $5 million, three-year COVID-19 Relief Effort, which launched earlier this spring in response to the devastating and long-term impact of the pandemic.

The Helen Frankenthaler Foundation selected the museums to each receive a one-time relief payment of $50,000 to offset the financial strain endured as a result of the pandemic. Each institution has been a recent partner of the Foundation in presenting exhibitions to advance Frankenthaler’s legacy or developing scholarship to further the understanding of the broader context of modern and contemporary art. The grants advance the Foundation’s mission to promote greater public interest in, support for, and understanding of the visual arts.

“The Guild Hall board and staff are deeply moved by the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation’s magnanimous and unexpected award,” said Executive Director Andrea Grover. “This unsolicited level of support is rare, and the news brought joy and confidence to our team during an otherwise tempestuous year. It gives us assurance that Guild Hall’s service to our community, as a multidisciplinary arts center for over 89 years, is valued and supported.”

In addition to Guild Hall, other organizations receiving funding include the Parrish Art Museum in nearby Water Mill, the Grey Art Gallery at New York University, MIT List Visual Arts Center, Montclair Art Museum, The Provincetown Art Association and Museum, and Rose Art Museum at Brandeis University.

“The mission of the Foundation allows our board to be nimble in addressing the most pressing issues in the field of visual arts—and it is obvious right now that those issues encompass COVID-19 relief and equity in the arts,” said Clifford Ross, Board Chair of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation.

“Support for cultural institutions is ever more critical in the face of these current crises,” stated Elizabeth Smith, Executive Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. “The Foundation is pleased to build on its past support of Guild Hall with this donation from our COVID-19 Relief Effort, which we felt was essential to helping the museum persevere through the unprecedented financial impact of this epidemic.”
