News from the Farm – October

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Dear Friends,
First, I want to thank you for the warm welcome I have received since joining Hallockville. I am excited to be part of this wonderful community, and I look forward to meeting more of you in the months ahead. And what a way to begin—with another wonderful Country Fair! From the woodcarvers and decoy makers to the breadmakers, broom makers, musicians, square dancers, vendors, and countless other participants who filled the grounds, the Fair was a wonderful celebration of the traditions and people that make the North Fork so special.
Thank you to our incredible staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes, to our vendors, demonstrators, performers, and community partners, and to everyone who came through the gates. Seeing the grounds buzzing with activity and so many people enjoying the farm was a wonderful reminder of what Hallockville does best: bringing our community together around history, agriculture, and the traditions that connect us to this place. Thank you to our sponsors, M&T Bank, Hampton Coffee and Suffolk County Department of Economic Development & Planning.
As we look ahead, there is much to be excited about at Hallockville. Our annual appeal will be arriving soon, and I hope you will consider supporting the programs, education, preservation, and community connections that make Hallockville such a special place. Whether you have been part of Hallockville for years or are just getting involved, your support truly makes a difference.
I also hope you will join us for the upcoming Prohibition on the North Fork event this upcoming weekend. Join the Old Mill Inn and Hallockville Museum Farm to celebrate their shared history of Prohibition on the North Fork. Register here. Our Members Annual Meeting on Sunday, November 1, at 3:00 p.m. It will be a wonderful opportunity to come together, reflect on the past year, and look toward the future. Find out more information about the meeting, and our important vote, here.
Thank you for everything you have done—and continue to do—to make Hallockville thrive. I am looking forward to getting to know you and working with you as the farm continues to grow!
New Acquisition
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Our Board Member & Historian, Richard Wines, met with Katharine Rhoades, a Harmony Hallock from Frederick, MD earlier this month.  Harmony Howell Aldrich Hallock (1795-1864) for whom the coverlet was made in 1830, was the second wife of Bethuel Hallock, son of Capt. Zachariah Hallock. Zachariah built a house just east of the Homestead for his son Bethuel in 1813. The house was demolished about 2002, but the washhouse behind it (now the museum’s “Little House” painted yellow) was salvaged.

We think Harmony was a frequent visitor in the Homestead, but we know very little about her.

Thank you for visiting and your wonderful addition to our historic collection.

We hope you will join us this fall and look forward to seeing you at Hallockville!

All the best,

Marianne Della Croce
