News from the Farm – September

Happy Autumn, Friend!

While we have officially entered the fall season, the memories of summer are still very fresh. Among them is our wonderful Barn-Raising Supper on August 22, which was not only a lovely event but a successful one as well. The evening honored Alfonso Martinez-Fonts for his outstanding leadership and preservation of the Museum Farm.

The event featured delicious fare by Christopher Michael Catering, music by Frank Palmeri and libations from Montauk Distilling CompanyPeconic Bay VineyardsMcCall WinesSparkling Pointe Vineyards & WineryRoanoke VineyardsClovis Point Vineyard & Winery, Reilly Cellars and Twin Fork Beer Co. Thanks also to North Fork Flower Farm for beautifying our tables with the gorgeous flowers.

A huge thanks to all of our sponsors and donors. A full list can be found via the link below:

2024 Barn-Raising Supper.

Board Vice-President and Barn-Raising Supper Chair Sara Phillips and the fundraising committee are also to be deeply thanked for their outstanding work!

All funds raised from the event support the adaptive re-use project of Hallockville’s 1937 Naugles Barn as an agricultural landmark and year-round community gathering space.

Donations are still being accepted for the project, click here to donate: BRS Donation.

Last but not least, thank you to event photographers Sianna Renee and Mike Tillman. Sianna’s photos can be found in our “Out and About the Farm” section, and a slideshow of Mike Tillman’s photos can be found here: Barn-Raising Supper Slideshow.

What a wonderful gathering of new and long-time Hallockville friends!

Country Fair Is Coming! Country Fair Is Coming!

Yes, we are so excited about Country Fair that we are saying it twice, and it is just days away (September 28 – 29)! If you have been before, you know there will be historic house tours, tons of children’s activities, live music, traditional crafts and other demonstrators, unique vendors and food trucks to name just a few of the attractions. Our neighbors at Long Island Antique Power Association will have sawmill and blacksmith demonstrations as well as a children’s train ride, truck pulls and other offerings.

New this year will be a Revolutionary War encampment by the 3rd NY Regiment 1775, colonial cooking by Diane Schwindt, a presentation by the Islip Horsemen’s Association Spirit of Long Island Mounted Drill Team and a traditional post-and-beam building demonstration by Kevin Durkin of Heritage Restorations.

Fun for all and all for a good cause to support our mission to take Long Island back to its family farming roots and explore their relevance today.

For a full schedule of activities, head to Country Fair Schedule.

We could still use a few volunteers. In addition to our everlasting appreciation, volunteers get free admission to the Fair. Students will receive community service certificates. For more information and to volunteer, email CF Volunteer.

Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation

Young Scholars Program

We are very grateful to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation (RDLGF) for providing a scholarship to our intern Madeline Heller this year as part of their Young Scholars Program.

Madeline recently graduated from Miami University of Ohio with a BA in art and architecture history. She said, “I am excited about interning at Hallockville because I am passionate about history and preservation and Hallockville excels in these areas.” Thanks, Madeline!

Did You Know?

We have a new map sign of our grounds. With 19 buildings on 28 acres and visitors arriving daily, we have wanted to have a map of our campus for years, and thanks to a grant we received from the New York State Council on the Arts, we finally do.

The sign is located just west of the Hudson House. Included is a QR code for our Sustainability Trail. (The Trail was made possible by a grant from the RDLGF.)

We are all looking forward to seeing you in the coming weeks at Hallockville!

As always, thank you for your support in all its forms. We deeply appreciate it.

All the best,

Heather
