“Now and Then” is a play by Sean Grennan that follows a young couple, Jamie and Abby, who work at a bar and IHOP in 1981. One evening, as Jamie is closing the bar, an enigmatic older man known as “The Man” appears and offers them $1,000 each to spend an hour talking with him. In need of the money, the couple agrees and is soon captivated by an astonishing story that profoundly impacts their lives. Throughout the night, The Man provides Jamie and Abby with advice, leading them to realize his deep interest in their decisions… and the reason he gives them is completely unbelievable.. However, when an upset second stranger shows up, the unbelievable starts to seem like it could actually be true. The play delves into themes of love, regret, relationships, and the passage of time, blending poignant moments with humor.
Characters:
JAMIE: late 20s-30s. Bartender and aspiring pianist. Attractive in a regular-guy way. Sincere, hardworking, very much in love with ABBY. Piano player a plus, but not required.
MAN: late 50s-60s. A bit beaten down but good-natured. Easy to talk to, well-spoken, sincere, and very intent on his mission tonight. Husband of 35 years to WOMAN. He is desperate. Piano player a plus, but not required.
ABBY: late 20s-early 30s. IHOP waitress and one-time English major. Funny, smart, and very much in love with JAMIE.
WOMAN: late 50s-60s. Strong, direct, loving; a little coarse. She is MAN’s wife of 35 years. No one knows her like he does, and no one knows him like her. She and MAN bicker but there is a bedrock of love there. They’d do anything for each other, and no one can hurt either of them like the other one can.
