~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There’s a lot in motion right now; new opportunities, ongoing advocacy, and real conversations about how organizations are navigating a complex and competitive landscape.
At the same time, we’ve been focused on moving a few key priorities forward, including strengthening access to funding and better connecting the arts to broader regional efforts like tourism and economic development.
This month reflects progress on both fronts, alongside a number of timely opportunities and updates across the field.
As always, thank you for being part of this work.
🎯 ADVOCACY UPDATES
Federal:
FY2027 Appropriations Process Underway
Arts funding conversations are actively underway at the federal level, with Congress currently accepting funding requests for FY2027. Your voice as a local arts leader carries weight. When legislators hear directly from constituents about the impact of arts funding in their districts, it strengthens the case for continued investment.
Americans for the Arts has developed a comprehensive Appropriations Guide to support this process, including:
  • Step-by-step instructions for submitting requests
  • Ready-to-use language and statistics
  • Guidance across key funding areas, including the NEA, NEH, IMLS, and Arts Education
This is a timely opportunity to ensure Long Island’s arts sector is represented in federal funding conversations.
State:
Budget Negotiations Enter Final Phase
New York State’s budget process is entering a critical phase, with both the Senate and Assembly releasing their one-house budget proposals ahead of the April 1 deadline.
There is strong momentum for the arts in both houses, as both the Senate and the Assembly are pushing for a significant increase to the Governor’s proposed FY27 arts allocations.
Advocates from across New York were in Albany this week for Arts Rally, meeting with legislators and reinforcing the importance of sustained and equitable investment.
Final negotiations with the Governor are now underway, and the coming days are critical. We will keep you updated as announcements are made.
🌟 SPOTLIGHT ON:
Toasted Oysters × LIAA: Creative Reuse in Action
LIAA Corporate Partner, Toasted Oysters, are expanding their commitment to sustainability by partnering with LIAA to make their recycled oyster shells available for creative use across the arts community.
As Co-Founder Mike Miezianka shared:
“We are dedicated to sustainable farming in all ways, and that includes repurposing what is normally discarded into beautiful art pieces here on Long Island.”
Through this initiative, shells are cleaned, sanitized, and prepared for reuse, creating new opportunities for artists and organizations to incorporate natural materials into their work and programming.
IN ACTION:
LIAA Member, Long Island Children’s Museum, is already taking advantage of this perk, incorporating more than 500 shells into an upcoming program where artist Christie Jones will guide young participants in creating watercolor paints from earth and mineral pigments, using them to paint oyster shells while exploring how natural materials connect to color, landscape, and local ecosystems. The program blends art, science, and environmental awareness in a hands-on learning experience. (Saturday, April 18 11AM – 3PM)
The Rise of Arts Prescribing
State of The Artist | March 17, 2026
On March 12, 2026, Georgia passed House Resolution 1007, formally recognizing the arts as a resource for mental health treatment. While the resolution is not binding, it signals how the arts are starting to show up in policy conversations beyond the usual funding and economic arguments.
Why it matters:
This is worth paying attention to. It raises questions about how the arts are being positioned and who is part of those conversations. If the arts are being recognized as part of public health infrastructure, what does that mean for partnerships, funding, and how we make the case for this work here?
