Happy Friday,
We’re getting excited for next Saturday’s History by a Hair event—and we’re not the only ones! Richard Kurin’s remarkable new book, which follows a 15-year scientific investigation into Thomas Jefferson, Sally Hemings and their descendants, has been making headlines this week in The New York Times, The Atlantic, NPR, the Today Show and Smithsonian Magazine. On October 3, Kurin will join us at NFAC, along with two descendants featured in the book, in partnership with Coming to the Table, for a conversation about the research and what it means for our understanding of American history. Burton’s Bookstore is selling copies in their store and at the event, with a book signing following the event in the theater lobby.
In the meantime, with the Nor’easter headed our way, we’ll be keeping a close eye on the weather—watch our social media for any theater closures or schedule changes. With the Maritime Festival postponed, we’re giving a nod to our maritime community with The Perfect Storm, alongside some perfect fall-weekend viewing: Notting Hill, Practical Magic, Resident Evil, and the new kids’ movie Forgotten Island.
And if fall has you feeling creative, don’t miss our upcoming playwriting workshop which starts next weekend.
Looking forward to seeing you soon,
Alison Omens
