Capernaum (“Chaos”) tells the story of Zain (Zain al-Rafeea), a Lebanese boy who sues his parents for the “crime” of giving him life. The film follows Zain as he journeys from gutsy, streetwise child to hardened 12-year-old “adult” fleeing his negligent parents, surviving through his wits on the streets, where he meets Ethiopian migrant worker Rahil, who provides him with shelter and food, as Zain takes care of her baby son Yonas in return. The festival begins with a screening of the acclaimed film adaptation of Shanley’s Pulitzer and Tony Award-winning play starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman. This powerful drama explores themes of faith, moral certainty, and the complexities of truth, followed by an in-house discussion on the film’s themes led by the NFAC team. Tickets.

3.21 – “Moonstruck” Screening + Q&A with Shanley
Day two features Shanley’s Academy Award-winning screenplay “Moonstruck,” starring Cher and Nicolas Cage. This beloved romantic comedy captures the heart of Italian-American culture in New York City. The evening includes authentic cannolis from the same bakery featured in the film and culminates with an intimate talkback session with Shanley himself. Tickets.

3.22 – Staged Reading: “Five Steps to Transcendence”
The festival concludes with a special staged reading of new work directed by Shanley and co-produced by Brave New Works. “Five Steps to Transcendence” presents five short stories about men and women that culminate in moments of epiphany – by turns tragic, funny, and deeply romantic. Following the 90-minute reading, Shanley and the cast will participate in a talkback, offering insights into the theatrical creative process. Tickets.

Jim Farmer The Mystery of Things…

As a playwright, Jim has written, produced, and directed numerous thought-provoking works, including Frontier Halloween, Pistols and Stamens, The Savage Routine of Living, We Never Learn, Yonder Window Breaks, I’ve Been Drunk for Three Weeks and I Have a Gun, Morning Milking, Evening Milking, and The Supper Club of Lost Causes.

In addition to his achievements in theater, Jim has an extensive career as a composer for film and television. His scores have enriched feature films such as Johnny Suede (starring Brad Pitt), Living in Oblivion (with Steve Buscemi and Peter Dinklage), Box of Moonlight (with Sam Rockwell), The Real Blonde (featuring Dennis Leary, Matthew Modine), and Double Whammy (starring Denis Leary and Steve Buscemi). He has also composed for notable television commercials for brands such as The Gap and Citibank.

The North Fork Arts Center & Burton’s Books welcome Kevin Wade for an exclusive presentation of his first novel, Johnny Careless.

Kevin Wade is a playwright, screenwriter, and television writer and producer whose credits include the stage plays Key Exchange, Mr. & Mrs, and Cruise Control, and the screenplays for Working Girl (seven Academy Award nominations), True Colors, Mr. Baseball, Junior, Meet Joe Black, and Maid in Manhattan. For television, he created the ABC television drama Cashmere Mafia. In 2010 he joined the rookie CBS drama Blue Bloods as a writer, and since 2011 he has served as its showrunner, executive producer, and backseat driver.

Johnny Careless introduces a gritty, captivating protagonist in Police Chief Jeep Mullane, a man whose troubled past and complicated present collide when the body of his childhood friend, Johnny Chambliss, surfaces in Long Island’s wealthy North Shore.
