Winning Together: Partnerships at Broad Cove

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On May 7, the Trust gathered with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and many of our conservation partners to celebrate Broad Cove!
In December, the Trust and the DEC closed on the conservation easement on the preserve, located in Aquebogue, securing its permanent protection.
May’s celebration highlighted this important milestone as well as shined a light on the many improvements to the preserve since the Trust acquired it in 2021.
These improvements include the parking area, bilingual signage, benches, a chronolog station, bluebird boxes, removal of invasive species and replanting of native grass plugs, and the two existing trails that lead to the water — as well as two new developments: the start of the meadow trail and the inclusion of Broad Cove on the New York State Birding Trail. Broad Cove Preserve is one of only three recognized sites on the North Fork of Long Island to be listed on this prestigious site!
Joining the Trust and the DEC at the announcement were partners from the Peconic Estuary Program (PEP), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), North Fork Audubon, New York State Bluebird Society, Peconic Baykeeper, Niamuck Land Trust, and community members representing the neighboring Bell Town Heritage Area, and a representative from Senator Palumbo.
Grants from the DEC, PEP, EPA — along with donations from individuals and foundations — have supported the variety of improvements at the preserve.
Thank you to everyone who joined us as we celebrated these accomplishments!
Broad Cove Preserve is open every day from dawn to dusk.
Plan your visit soon.
Meaningful Impact | New Suffolk Waterfront
“The New Suffolk Waterfront Fund functions to preserve historical waterfront property, protect and propagate native species and wildlife, while at the same time providing a social and activity hub for the community. The commercial assets of the waterfront — the restaurant and the marina — generate revenue which helps to finance the organization’s ongoing maintenance and infrastructure improvement”
-Nancy Lieberman, Chair, NSWF Board of Directors
As far back as 1989, the New Suffolk Civic Association was concerned about the future of the waterfront and connected with the Peconic Land Trust on possible solutions. Fast forward to 2005, the opportunity to acquire the 3.4-acre property was on the table. At that time, the community came together to establish the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund as its own 501(c)(3) and to begin raising funds for the property’s acquisition. The Fund worked with the Trust on community meetings to understand the community perspective, and in December 2007 the Trust acquired the property using funding from our revolving fund, the Peter J. Sharp Fund for the Environment. This provided the time needed by the New Suffolk Waterfront Fund to raise the money to acquire the property, which happened in December of 2010. Today the Fund manages a lease of the old Galley Ho building to a restaurant, manages the docks, has vibrant community gardens, established a boardwalk along the entire 240-foot western edge, and submarine beach, named in honor of its former role as the location for trials for the first US Navy submarine, the USS Holland.
Back for their 37th season!
Quail Hill Farm, one of the original Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms in the U.S., is located in Amagansett, New York, on land donated to the Peconic Land Trust by Deborah Ann Light.
Since it was established in 1990, Quail Hill Farm has grown to 35 acres serving over 250 families. The community farm also delivers fresh food to local restaurants and food pantries and participates in the Sag Harbor Farmers Market throughout the season.
The growing season has begun on the farm as they get ready to open the barn doors for their 37th season on May 30th. Throughout the season you’ll be savoring a wide variety of locally grown food, from late spring’s salad and cooking greens to autumn’s brassicas, and lots in between. Our season runs through the end of October
Save the date: On May 23rd, Quail Hill Farm will be hosting its 6th Plant Sale featuring vegetables, flowers, and herbs, all grown in our greenhouses especially for you. You’ll be able to enjoy the flavors of the farm right from your home!
There is still time for you to join our CSA, the season starts on May 30th!
