Hiking Tips

Fall season is approaching, which calls for great hiking weather!

Before you explore outdoors, these are a few tips and tricks to keep in mind to stay safe and alert for your upcoming adventure.

———————-

  1. Protect yourself from ticks
With ticks being abundant on Long Island, it is important to take safety precautions to protect yourself. One easy way to protect yourself is to simply tuck your pants into your long socks since ticks climb up from high bushes and grass. You can also invest in a pair of leg gaiters for additional protection. As a finishing touch, spray some insect repellant over your clothes and footwear.
  1. Share your location details
If you are hiking alone or in a small group, it is a good idea to inform a trusted individual about your planned route with much detail as possible before starting your adventure.
  1. Take a first aid kit
Having a first aid kit on hand is important as it can save lives. Ensure that your first aid kit contains Aspirin, Benadryl, bandages, and any other supplies that are necessary. It is also important to have sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun.
  1. Wear appropriate clothing and footwear
Layering clothes is a great idea to consider if the weather is chilly to keep yourself warm throughout your hike. Also, boots provide better traction on slippery trails and additional ankle support.
  1. Pack light snacks and sufficient water

Granola bars or protein bars are light in your bag, but substantial in your belly and make sure to bring more water than you think you will need to stay hydrated.

Hiking is a great way to explore the outdoors. These tips and tricks can make a positive impact on your next adventure this upcoming season. Remember to stay safe, alert, and enjoy!
