Peconic Land Trust
Awarded Farmland for the New Generation
Regional Navigator Grant

Farmland for a New Generation New York (FNG-NY) is a program coordinated by the American Farmland Trust with support from New York State to help address one of agriculture’s greatest challenges: ensuring the next generation of farmers has access to affordable farmland. As many New York farmers near retirement, an estimated 2 million acres of farmland could be lost to development without successful farmland transition and succession planning.Launched in 2018, FNG-NY connects farmers seeking land with landowners who want to keep their land in agricultural production. The program includes a statewide Resource Center, a farmland-linking website, and a network of Regional Navigators who provide local expertise and support to farmers and landowners across New York. More information about the program can be found at www.NYFarmlandFinder.org.  The Peconic Land Trust has been a Regional Navigator in the program since its inception.

FNG-NY Regional Navigators provide personalized support to help farmers and landowners keep farmland in agriculture. They assist beginning and established farmers in finding farmland, help retiring farmers and landowners plan for successful farm transfers, connect participants with trusted legal, financial, and agricultural professionals, facilitate matches between landowners and prospective farmers, and offer educational resources on leasing, succession planning, estate planning, conservation easements, and farmland affordability.

Serving as an FNG-NY Regional Navigator builds on the Peconic Land Trusts expertise in connecting farmers with landowners, technical assistance, and resources, while providing guidance, workshops, and networking opportunities. This role reinforces the Trust’s strategic priorities, farmland access, farmer support, sustainable practices, and community partnerships.  By leveraging our expertise, partnerships, and hands-on programs, the Trust helps ensure farmland remains productive, resilient, and affordable, sustaining Long Island’s agricultural economy, heritage, and environmental stewardship for generations to come.

The Peconic Land Trust recently received an FNG-NY Regional Navigator Grant Award that will support one-on-one technical assistance for beginning farmers, guidance for farmers and landowners on farm leases, lease rates, financing, and conservation easements, and workshops that strengthen farmland access across the region. The Trust will also expand resources for historically and currently underrepresented farmers, including non-English-speaking communities, by reducing language barriers and increasing access to educational materials, in-person and virtual trainings, and professional development opportunities.

By strengthening connections between farmers, landowners, and agricultural resources, this grant will help ensure that Long Island’s farmland remains productive, accessible, and resilient for generations to come.

Growing Together:
A New Greenhouse for the Community Gardeners at the Ag Center!

Exciting things are emerging at the Ag Center in Southold. Thanks to funding through the Urban Farms and Community Garden Grant, awarded in November 2025, a new 30′ x 28′ Gothic Arch Greenhouse has been installed, creating exciting opportunities for gardeners to grow, learn, and connect throughout the year.

The greenhouse represents a significant investment in the future of the garden and the community it supports. Its primary purpose is to extend both the spring and fall growing seasons, allowing gardeners to make the most of every opportunity to cultivate healthy, productive gardens.

Because the greenhouse is heated, gardeners will be able to start seedlings in late winter, giving vegetables, herbs, and flowers a healthy head start before they are transplanted into their garden plots. Throughout the summer, the greenhouse will support succession planting, enabling gardeners to start new crops while others are still being harvested. As the seasons change, it will also provide the ideal environment for preparing cool-season vegetables for fall planting, extending harvests well beyond the traditional growing season.

The greenhouse will serve a purpose that reaches far beyond agriculture. It will become a warm and welcoming gathering place for the gardening community, providing a year-round space where gardeners can meet, share ideas, exchange growing techniques, and participate in educational workshops. During the colder months, meetings that were previously held at the Southold Library can now take place right at the garden, strengthening the sense of community and connection among gardeners.

The new greenhouse is more than just a structure—it is an investment in education, sustainability, and community. It will enable gardeners to collaborate throughout the year rather than only during the growing season, fostering relationships that are as enduring as the gardens themselves.

This fall, the greenhouse will shelter its first seedlings as they emerge from the soil, serving as a powerful symbol of growth and possibility. Thanks to the support of the Urban Farms and Community Garden Grant, the Community Garden is better prepared than ever to cultivate abundant harvests, deepen meaningful collaboration, and sustain a thriving gardening community for years to come.

Visiting the Strawberry Fields at
Condzella Farm
If luscious strawberries make you swoon, you should visit Condzella Farm’s strawberry patch in Wading River! As part of our June Connections programming, we went behind the scenes for a tour with farm owner John Condzella who shared his family’s long history as multi-generational farmers. With the Trust’s assistance, they conserved a portion of their farmland in 2024 which raised needed funds to purchase adjacent farmland and bring it back into the family’s farm holdings. We learned about the varieties of strawberries they’re growing on 3 acres of the farm, including Flavorfest, Earliglow, Wendy, and Sparkle, and then enjoyed picking and tasting these incredibly delicious berries right off the vines. This hardworking family is truly dedicated to growing the best strawberries – and vegetables, fruits, flowers, and even hops – for your enjoyment. Take time to visit their farmstand, you’ll be glad you did.
