Community Conversation: Art as Therapy—
The Historic Murals of King’s Park
————
Join our Preservation Director, Tara Cubie, and Preserve King’s Park Psychiatric Center (Preserve KPPC) at the Mills Pond Gallery in St. James, NY for a Community Conversation focused on one of the site’s murals.
We’ll explore the mural as an interpretation of the former residents’ experiences, as therapy, and as a historical artifact. Registration is required.
Join us for an afternoon of history and poetry in the garden of Joseph Lloyd Manor, as we celebrate the 313th birthday of Jupiter Hammon (1711–before 1806), America’s first published Black poet. Author David Mills will read original poetry from his award-winning book Boneyarn, the sole book of poems about slavery in New York.
Joseph Lloyd Manor will open at 2:00 PM for self-guided tours and refreshments. David Mills’s talk will begin at 2:30 PM. This is a free event! Space is limited – registration is required.
Join our Preservation Director, Tara Cubie, at the Phillips House Museum for a fun and informative lecture. Tara will break down some of the most common myths and misunderstandings about historic preservation, using real-life examples from Rockville Centre and across Long Island.
View our current exhibition, enjoy complimentary treats, and 20% off Preservation Long Island’s collection of books about Long Island history, architecture, and design.
We are also offering a raffle prize that includes a one-year Preservation Long Island Family Membership!

Visit our gallery on Main Street in Cold Spring Harbor to step into the late nineteenth-century world of Edward Lange (1846–1912) and follow his journey as an immigrant artist encountering a Long Island rapidly changing around him. His artwork circulated within Long Island and beyond, drawing in tourists seeking recreational fun in towns along the North and South Shores.
This exhibition of watercolors, photographs, and historical objects on loan from collections across Long Island accompanies the release of Preservation Long Island’s latest publication of the same name, which presents over two years of new research into Edward Lange’s life and work.
Click below for details about our November 16th special book event and to order your copy of the new Lange publication!
