Celebrate Black Poetry Day at Joseph Lloyd Manor
Tours, Poetry, and Refreshments in the Garden

Join us for an afternoon of history and poetry in the garden of Joseph Lloyd Manor, as we celebrate the 313th birthday of Jupiter Hammon (1711–before 1806), America’s first published Black poet. Author David Mills will read original poetry from his award-winning book Boneyarn, the sole book of poems about slavery in New York.

Joseph Lloyd Manor will open at 2:00 PM for self-guided tours and refreshments. David Mills’s talk will begin at 2:30 PM. This is a free event! Space is limited – registration is required.

Presented by Preservation Long Island and the Town of Huntington African American Historic Designation Council.

Lecture: Historic Preservation Myths

———————————

Join Tara Cubie, Preservation Director of Preservation Long Island, for a fresh perspective on historic preservation.

Tara will break down some of the most common myths about historic preservation such as “historic designation means you can’t change anything about your house” or “preserving old buildings lowers property values.” Tara will set the record straight using real-life examples from Rockville Centre and across Long Island.

This FREE lecture at the Phillips House Museum is a partner event with the Rockville Center Historical Society.
