Dear Friends of Preservation Long Island,
I hope you are enjoying the remaining weeks of summer. As the weather begins to cool, it’s a wonderful time to visit one or all three of our historic houses across Long Island, and to stop by our Cold Spring Harbor exhibition gallery to view our fascinating current exhibition, Wood and Water: Furniture on Long Island, 1660–1860, an exploration of more than 200 years of Long Island furniture and decorative arts.
We have been busy planning an exciting lineup of programs, tours, and special events for the fall season, and I am delighted to preview several of them in this update.
And in case you missed some of our in-person and virtual programs from earlier this year, we are pleased to share video recordings below of last January’s Panel Discussion at The Winter Show, the May Preservation Workshop, and the August 6 Wood and Water Author’s Talk.

Historic Preservation Under Threat
On the historic preservation front, you may have seen recent news coverage of proposed changes to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) by the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP). According to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, if implemented, these new rules would dramatically diminish the effectiveness of the NHPA and the legal protections currently in place for historic and cultural places across the country. Along with other historic preservation organizations at the regional and state levels, we are monitoring developments in the review process and the timeline for public comment.
