In this creative workshop, students will learn the basics of hand-made book production while practicing a simple folding technique and preparing a book cover, both techniques that can be done at home. This 2-hour workshop will provide an introductory glimpse into the use of watercolor, where students will paint a panoramic scene, accordion fold it, and turn it into a one-of-a-kind personal art book.

Karyn Mannix leads a group workshop for adults on creating a 3D abstract accordion book. This workshop will explore design and production strategies for incorporating abstract pop-ups in artist books. We will explore paper folding, paper cutting, and cover making to create a simple one-of-kind, 3-dimensional abstract pop-up book.

This 5-week workshop will explore and discuss Decorative Painting techniques sponging, ragging, glazing, layering and distressing, metallic finishes, stenciling, faux bois, faux marbling, etc. Bring wooden or foam-core boards to practice on, and one small wooden piece to decorate.
Bring a selection of colors you would like to work with. Chalk or Mineral paints, wax, metallic or crackle paints, stencil, chalk and wax brushes, plastic containers for water

This five-week watercolor workshop will focus on two exceptional artists, the Swiss born German Paul Klee and the Cuban born Lourdes Sanchez. By analyzing their work, we will examine how each artist developed their palette and composition choices, while experimenting with their techniques and applying them to our own work. Weekly demonstrations of watercolor techniques will include gradated washes, wet on wet, wet on dry, and dry brush. Students are encouraged to bring photos of subject matter they would like to explore.

LEARN HOW TO CREATE A FANTASTIC AND UNIQUE BOOK! This show presents a fantastic look at books—creative books, what books mean to us, censorship of books, and more. With guidance from Barbara and using the inspiration of the SAC show, bookmakers will develop a theme for their book and manipulate materials on hand to make a book of any fun, conceptual, and creative shape, size, or idea. A book can take any form! Barbara will assist bookmakers in different ways to write, draw, fold, bind, cut, glue, paint, etc., to realize a unique book.

Barbara Thomas is a longtime artist and teacher in the East End. She is also known far and wide for illustrating the iconic Amelia Bedelia children’s books first created by her father, Fritz Siebel.

Following screening of “The ABCs of Book Banning”, join us for a panel discussion with local librarians Steve Alcalde, Sara Fiore, Marci Byrne, and Liz Burns, Director of the Rogers Memorial Library. Christina Strassfield, Director of the Southampton Arts Center, will moderate the discussion. This free event is presented in conjunction with the Southampton Arts Center’s Look at the Book exhibit on display through May 4.

Join Look at the Book artist John Buchbinder and Marta Kazandjian on Sunday, April 21 at 1 PM to discuss John’s Memory Book. John Buchbinder was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and during treatment experienced an adverse event that impacted his speech. His work with Marta Kazandjian, a local and dedicated speech pathologist, resulted in the discovery that his photographs, printed and pasted in spiral bound notebooks with the help of his wife, Nikki Shomer, sparked his recall of meaningful moments…becoming his “Photographic Memory.”

STUDIO: FIGURE DRAWING WORKSHOP

Working from a live model, artist Linda Capello’s figure drawing workshop will explore techniques of line, mass, gesture, proportion, and foreshortening, starting with short poses and working towards one long pose. Each student will receive personal attention and detailed instruction. Dry mediums such as soft vine charcoal, conte, or graphite, and kneaded erasers, and 14″x17″ or larger pads, are requested.
