On the bitterly cold afternoon of Monday, January 13, 1840, about 150 men, women, and children left Manhattan on the prestigious steamship Lexington, bound for Stonington, CT. The vessel never made it, as fire broke out, engulfing the ship in flames. Only four of the passengers and crew would survive, marking the worst maritime disaster in Long Island history. Curated by Bill Bleyer, author of The Sinking of the Steamboat Lexington on the Long Island Sound (History Press, 2023), this exhibit includes lithographs of the flaming vessel and original documents related to the aftermath of the disaster, including interviews with survivors, ensuing legal investigations, and articles reporting on the disaster at the time.

Featured in our Gish Gallery Nov. 2, 2024 – Jan. 25, 2025.
