Shelter Island History Museum: 2026 Havens Harvest Event Launches a New Tradition

The Havens Harvest Event

at the Shelter Island History Museum—

A New Tradition…

—————–

—————————-

It was a crisp autumn morning outside the barn at the SIHM as Ray Congdon and his crew were firing up about a cord of wood for smoking and grilling. As the volunteers were busy setting up pumpkins and apples for the tables and all the wonderful silent auction items, vintage and prop planes flew over our tent, gliding into Klenawicus Airport for the Fly-in. Excited to offer this completely new experience for our community on this beautiful Shelter Island Day, Havens Harvest was ready to begin.

At 2:00 pm, guests arrived for the Havens Harvest, greeted by our charming servers led by all-around star Debbie Speeches, and treated to local hard and soft ciders, North Fork wines, and local brews. King Andrew supplied a beautiful presentation of cheese, fruit, nuts, and jams, made even more special with the appearance of Reeve’s and Jesse’s beautiful newborn, Iona.

As the guests were entertained by the sounds and songs of Lisa and Tom with the Peconic County Ramblers, the food came and kept coming—roasted clams and oysters, grilled sea bass sliders, smoked brisket sliders, Brussels sprouts, baked potatoes, corn, and cinnamon roast apples for dessert. A great mix of guests was there to support the museum, and everyone enjoyed bidding on items donated generously by the many local vendors, restaurants, golf courses, vineyards, and artists in a delightful silent auction. The beautiful music continued until 6:00 pm, as the auction winners collected their treasures and guests lingered as they gathered around “Ray’s outdoor kitchen” a little past dusk.

This was truly a “Historic Event” and the beginning of a new tradition. The success of this event facilitates programming for all Islanders to enjoy.
