“More than twenty-five years ago, I received a phone call from Mary Ellen Adipietro, who shared her idea of organizing a run/walk on Shelter Island to support women on the North and South Forks. At the time, I didn’t know Mary Ellen, but I agreed to visit her house the following evening. To be honest, I was a nervous wreck—meeting people I didn’t know, unsure of what to expect or their level of experience. Did they even know how to organize a 5K? I certainly didn’t.

The meeting turned out to be one of the most successful I’ve ever had, and the rest, as they say, is history. Mary Ellen and her outstanding committee became good friends, created an amazing race (which remains my favorite fundraiser), and over the past 25 years, they have raised so much money that for many years we have been able to host a three-day retreat for breast and gynecological cancer survivors in our local community. The Renewal and Hope Retreat has become a favorite among our ladies, and we couldn’t do it without the Shelter Island 5K.

Working with these dedicated men and women for the last 25 years has been inspiring, fun, and incredibly rewarding.” – Susie RodenPresident of The Coalition for Women’s Cancers

The Shelter Island 5K has been supporting Lucia’s Angels since its inception in 2006, following the passing of our dear friend Lucia Terzi Bagan from breast cancer. Mary Ellen Adipietro, the president and founder of the Shelter Island 5K, was among our band of dedicated friends who supported Lucia and her family through the most challenging times of her breast cancer journey.

We, her friends, raised funds to pay for a full-time caregiver for Lucia’s children. We took turns staying with Lucia in the hospital and at the Hospice Center in Huntington 24/7 so that she would never be alone. We brought her all her favorite foods, candles, and music and shared stories and memories we had with her. We read her books and poetry and ensured she was surrounded with love until her very last moment with us. It was Lucia’s wish that other women could receive the same kind of love and care during their most difficult times.

At that time, there were other breast cancer charities that supported women undergoing treatment, but none specifically focused on stage 4 breast cancer patients. Just a few weeks after Lucia’s passing, Lucia’s Angels was formed.

Today, with the continued support of the Shelter Island 5K, Lucia’s Angels assists over 25 women each year with breast and/or gynecological cancers living on the East End of Long Island. The organization provides help and funding for gasoline gift cards, grocery gift cards, heating bills, dental work, housecleaning, rent, eyeglasses, food trains, babysitting, health insurance premiums, automobile repairs, ambulatory trips, therapeutic massages, transportation, salon services, and wigs. From fulfilling special wishes like one more trip to the beach to providing extra childcare or simply holding a hand, Lucia’s spirit and her Angels will be there. – Stacy Quarty, President of Lucia’s Angels
