Historical Museum

Make plans to come out for an early autumn weekend during Southold Historical Museum’s Autumn Antiques, Fine Art, and Crafts Fair, held on the beautiful grounds of the Maple Lane Complex at 55200 Main Road, Southold, from 9am – 4pm, Sept. 28 and Sept. 29.

There will be vendors selling fine art, antiques, pottery, photography, handmade crafts, and vintage treasures. There will also be live music! Join us as we partner with the Old Town Arts and Crafts Guild to present this two-day event. Admission of $5.00 for adults entitles entrants to a free raffle ticket!

We invited our intern, Casey Christensen, to learn more about the items in our collection and to create a short video for social media about something that interested her when she worked with us this summer.

Casey created this video about two embroidered poems located in the dressing room of the Ann Currie-Bell house, both stitched in the 1830s. We were so pleased by her interest and enthusiasm about our local history and our collections.

The theme of our Ten Squared online art exhibit and sale this autumn is The Natural World Around Us. In this non-juried exhibition, artists can submit up to three pieces of work that are 10” x 10”. Each work will be sold for $100, half of which will benefit Southold Historical Museum and half to the artist.

The changing seasons and landscape of Southold inspire the artists who are motivated by the love of nature and growing things. Artists have become aware of the dangers facing the natural world. For this reason, this season’s exhibit will celebrate The Natural World Around Us.

Finished works are due with submission forms to Southold Historical Museum the week of Oct. 21 – Oct. 25. All mediums are accepted. Limit of three submissions. Please email art@southoldhistorical.org for artist inquiries or call 631.765.5500. The online exhibit and sale will be Nov. 15 – Dec 15, 2024.

A lovely time was had by all at the farewell party for Executive Director Deanna Witte-Walker, held in the Ann Currie-Bell House at the Maple Lane Complex.

Many friends and colleagues came to wish Deanna all the best and to express their thanks, friendship, and respect.

We were pleased that so many visitors enjoyed our Living History Day this past weekend at the Maple Lane Complex. Attendees were treated to a Revolutionary era encampment featuring the reenactors from the Third New York Regiment.

Visitors experienced 18th-century camp life, including demonstrations of firearms, military drills, and other daily tasks. There were also blacksmithing, spinning, basket weaving, printing press, and carpentry demonstrations, as well as music by Eastern L.I. Old Time Jam.
