Looking to get involved with America’s 250th celebration this year?

Preregistration opens May 16 for the 2026 “Redcoats and Rebels” Long Island History Hunt, a Revolutionary War-themed adventure running May 23–September 30 across 26 historic sites.

Southold Historical Museum is proud to be a participating stop. Visit the Maple Lane Campus (55200 Main Rd.) to learn about Jared Landon’s role during the British occupation of Southold, snap a selfie by the iconic red museum sign, and upload it to complete the challenge.

Participants can collect free Revolutionary-themed trading cards at each site and compete for prizes, including a $1,776 grand prize, museum memberships, and merchandise. Visiting even one site qualifies you for one of five smaller prizes.

Little Free Library at the Maple Lane Campus

———————————-

Thanks to a generous anonymous donation, our Maple Lane Campus is now home to a charming Little Free Library — a welcoming spot where visitors can “take a book, share a book.”

Little Free Libraries are built on the simple idea that books connect people. Whether you leave behind a favorite novel, discover a new read, or stop by to browse, every visit helps keep the spirit of community and reading alive.

We have books on local history and America’s 250th, amongst others.

Often described as “mini-town squares,” these little libraries create meaningful connections one book at a time. We invite everyone to stop by, explore, and share the joy of reading.

Reminder: Community Funding Budget Vote Coming May 19

Kindly consider supporting Southold’s history and future by voting on May 19. The Community Funding budget proposal would provide $183,155 annually to fund Southold Historical Museum’s operations, educational programs, and the preservation of its nineteen historic buildings and archives.

It also expands access by offering every household in the school district a family membership with benefits like free admission, discounts, and special event invitations—strengthening community pride and engagement.

Voting takes place from 3 PM–9 PM at Southold Junior/Senior High School (420 Oaklawn Ave), in the gymnasium. Your vote helps ensure these shared resources remain vibrant and accessible for generations to come.
