Collections Corner: Map of Japan

——————

In the age of Google maps, it is easy to underestimate the importance of printed maps not just for traveling, but also for gaining a global perspective.

——————

This map of Japan belonged to the brother-in-law of Peconic resident Captain Henry J. Green. In 1845, Mercator Cooper, in his ship Manhattan, rescued 22 Japanese sailors from a shipwreck off the coast of Japan and aided them in returning home. Manhattan became the first American ship to visit the country since Japan closed its borders to all outsiders. During the rescue, Cooper obtained this rare map of Japan.

——————

When the United States decided to impel Japan to open the country for trade in 1952, Captain Henry Green personally transported his brother-in-law’s map to Secretary of State Daniel Webster in Washington D.C.

——————

The map is now part of our collection at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point.
