Collections Corner: Scrimshaw Carving

——————————–

Scrimshaw is the art of carving bones, baleen and walrus tusks- all of which were readily available to sailors passing time aboard a whaling vessel. Most carvers made decorative household items and personal objects out of leftover bone scraps.

Less artistic sailors might pay a fellow sailor who was a better artisan to carve for them. Most decorations were made visible by rubbing black pigment into the carving but occasionally color was added.

This collection is on display at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse. Visit us when we reopen Memorial Day weekend, or schedule a private tour for your group or club.
