Collections Corner: 1930 Southold High School Baseball Team

———————————-

We could use a little help in naming the players in this 1930 Southold High School Baseball team photo.

The photo was taken by Linnaeus Allen, and the coach, Alfred Dart, is in the far right back. Gerald Hobson, who not only played baseball but also basketball too, stands in the back row, 3rd from left. Oddly, the description written on the back is unclear about whether the 2nd from right is Frank Kane or George DeLong. Do you know?

The others are, in no particular order: ? Thompson, George Worth, E. Tuthill, ? Shipuleski, William Grattan, Howard Wyche, ? Allen, ? Bullock. If you can help us sort out who is who that would be great! You can email to ATTN: AMY at: info@southoldhistorical.org

Winter Lecture: “Storms, Shipwrecks, Lifesavers & Lightkeepers”

You’re invited to a special presentation by Angela Reich from the Fire Island Lighthouse on Thursday, Mar. 27, 2025 at 1:00 PM titled: “Storms, Shipwrecks, Lifesavers & Lightkeepers: The History of the Fire Island Lighthouse.”

Angela Reich is a Fire Island Lighthouse docent and author of Shipwreck of Hopes—a novel inspired by the 1850 wreck of the ship Elizabeth. This historical event played a pivotal role in shaping the early Life Saving Service who patrolled our shores and safeguarded maritime traffic along the nation’s busiest shipping lanes.

Presented by Southold Historical Museum, the docents at the Nautical Museum at Horton Point Lighthouse, and Fire Island Lighthouse, the lecture will be held at the Ann Currie-Bell House at the Maple Lane Campus, 55200 Main Rd, Southold. A book sale will follow the presentation, $20 cash only, with 20% of the proceeds generously donated to Southold Historical Museum

Potato Barns

Join Joel Reitman as he takes us on an observational tour of the remaining potato barns on the North Fork. Remnants of a proud history that began in the late 1800s and peaked around 1945, today all that remains of a once-bustling potato farming industry and many proud families are several barns, a potato chip company, and potato processing facility.
