“The Emergence of a True North Fork Cuisine”

with Chef John Ross

————————

We are pleased to welcome Chef and Author John Ross as our first speaker at Southold Historical Museum’s “Farm to Table: A Not So New Concept” winter series.

——————

The lecture, titled “The Emergence of a True North Fork Cuisine”, will be held at the Southold Town Recreation Center on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 4:00pm. As a professional chef since 1965 and the chef/owner of Ross’ North Fork Restaurant in Southold, NY for 27 years, Ross is considered a pioneer of the Farm to Table movement. He cooked from scratch using local fresh ingredients procured from farm stands, seafood markets, and local wineries at a time when people were embracing convenience foods. Ross is also the author of several books, including The Poetry of Cooking, The Food and Wine of the North Fork, and The Story of North Fork Wine.

——————

Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the history and evolution

of North Fork cuisine from a true expert.

Special thanks to Poliwoda Team of Douglas Elliman Real Estate.

Southold Historical Museum Receives

a Technical Assistance Grant

————————

Southold Historical Museum is grateful to announce it is a recipient of a 2023 Technical Assistance Grant from the Preservation League of New York State and their program partners at the New York State Council on the Arts.

——————

This grant will fund a structural engineering report of the historic Prince Building.

——————

The Prince Building is home to Southold Historical Museum’s Administrative Center, Archives, Museum Gift Shop, and the Treasure Exchange shop. The shops are open year-round. The structure was built in 1874 for Henry Wells Prince (1839-1925) and G. Frank Hommel. Hommel occupied the west side of the building, where he ran a shoe store. Prince occupied the east, where he ran a successful dry goods business. The building was twice home to the United States Post Office – first in 1893 and again from 1932 through the 1950s.

——————

The structural assessment is to determine the load bearing capacity of the Museum’s archival research and meeting room on the second floor. The report will be completed by DiLandro Andrews Engineering, PLLC. The project budget is $1500 with $1200 coming from the grant and $300 being funded by the Museum.
