Collections Corner: Peconic Lane

——————

May 7, 1942. This image from our Meredith collection captures a moment in time in Peconic. It was taken from the top of the stores on Peconic Lane facing southeast. The large, wood-shingled house in the center of the photo is no longer there. A dirt lot now stands in its place.

——————

Notice the car crossing the railroad tracks. The crossing sign reads:

“Stop. Railroad Crossing. Look Out for the Cars.”

——————

Cars would need to be cautious at early crossings. Automated gates were not invented until the middle of the 20th century. Prior to that, if there was a gate at a crossing, it might be hand-operated by an employee at a crossing, usually only during certain hours. Other crossings might only have lights to warn approaching drivers.
