Lecture: “The Nautical Roots of Everyday Sayings”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
——————————-
Discover the surprising maritime beginnings of common words and phrases—learn how “filibusters” originated with sailors, why the first “skyscrapers” were actually ship sails, and how “turning a blind eye” is linked to Admiral Nelson’s bold act of defiance at sea.
Author Cynthia Barrett, inspired by her book Three Sheets to the Wind: The Nautical Origins of Everyday Expressions, will give a fascinating presentation on Thursday, March 26 at 1:00 PM at Southold Historical Museum’s Maple Lane Campus (55200 Main Road, Southold).
——————-
Barrett will also reflect on her own family’s deep nautical ties, from a World War II naval officer father to a whaling great-grandfather from Cold Spring Harbor, and how those stories shaped her research.
Admission is free. Please RSVP to attend.
Thanks for an Enjoyable Lecture by Mary Korpi
————
Special thanks to Author Mary Korpi and all who attended her recent lecture “Stella Prince… Her Story Continues” at Southold Historical Museum.
This fascinating lecture explored new facts about the history of Horton Point Lighthouse through the eyes of its sole female lighthouse keeper, Stella Prince.
Korpi’s book, The Lady Lighthouse Keeper, is a fictionalized narrative about Prince, the only woman who served as a lighthouse keeper at Horton Point Lighthouse in Southold, NY and resided at the lighthouse for over half her life, longer than anyone else. The Lady Lighthouse Keeper offers an intimate and relatable look at family life, set against the demanding task of maintaining a lighthouse. The lecture offered insight into life on the North Fork in the late 1800s from a woman’s perspective.
