ANNOUNCING
SECOND ANNUAL SCULPTURE @ SYLVESTER MANOR
$25,000 Awarded by the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA)
—————————————————–
Shelter Island, New York: Following the resounding success of the inaugural exhibition in 2024, Sylvester Manor is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Sculpture @ Sylvester Manor exhibition. Funded by a generous $25,000 grant from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), this year’s outdoor exhibition will continue to elevate the dialogue around art, history, and landscape within a multicultural community. The exhibition will run from June 14 to September 13, 2025.
Executive Director of NYSCA Erika Mallin said, “On behalf of the Council and staff, I am so proud that we are supporting the critical work of so many nonprofit organizations all across the state, including work of Sylvester Manor. New York State’s art and culture nonprofits make us a global leader, strengthening our connections to each other and the larger world. I thank you for your dedication and service and look forward to all your work in the coming year.”
This year’s exhibition invites artists to submit proposals that engage with the theme of landscape and history, interpreted through the lens of visual art. The aim of the exhibition is to inspire critical conversations about Sylvester Manor’s rich and layered past; one that intersects Indigenous, European, and African histories.
Curator Tom Cugliani will once again bring his expert eye and in-depth experience in contemporary art as well as his life long history with Shelter Island to the project. His gallery launched the careers of established artists such as Christian Marclay, Jack Pierson and Charles Le Dray, following which Cugliani served as Marlborough Gallery’s point person for the great American painter Alex Katz. His curation will deepen the engagement between artists and the public, forging connections between the art, the site, and the local community.
Sylvester Manor is situated on Shelter Island, in a landscape that encompasses woodlands, coastal shorelines, formal gardens, and pastoral meadows. It holds significant historical relevance, representing a convergence of three distinct cultures—Indigenous peoples, European settlers, and the African enslaved laborers who once worked the land. Artists are encouraged to reflect this intersection of histories in their works, whether by installing existing pieces, creating new works from imported materials, or using organic material sourced directly from the Manor grounds, left to biodegrade naturally, enhancing the dialogue between art and nature.
Submissions for proposals are open to artists from the East End of Long Island. Artists should send visual and/or written documentation to tcugliani@sylvestermanor.org by March 15, 2025. Full submission guidelines can be found at www.sylvestermanor.org/sculpture. Selected artists will be announced in April 2025.
Following the success of last year where 25 artworks were viewed by more than 2,500 visitors, this year’s exhibition will offer a significant opportunity for artists to explore the history and landscape of Sylvester Manor, adding a vibrant dimension to the cultural life of Shelter Island and the East End of Long Island. It is expected that this year’s exhibition will be a vibrant addition to the East End’s flourishing arts scene, fostering a space for creativity, history, and connection.
