“One of the best ways to understand a people is to observe their dance,” says Johnnoy Johnson. Join Johnnoy as he shares his love for dance, his knowledge, and his passion for his Jamaican roots, as he highlights and educates us on the movements that are an inextricable part of Afro-Caribbean spirituality. Dance plays a vital role in Afro-Caribbean religious tradition and is one of the outlets used to connect and aid those of African descent in identifying where their ancestors lived in the Motherland (Africa).

Participants will learn about different deities and their associated gestures; explore movement vocabularies from Jamaica, Cuba, Trinidad and Tobago, and Haiti; and gain an understanding of ritualistic dance and how it has become part of the contemporary dance and choreography tradition. While this is a movement-based workshop and participants will be moving, no prior skill level is required. The dancing will be easily adaptable for all ages and fitness levels.

JOHNNOY JOHNSON
A dancer, choreographer, and educator, Johnnoy began his dancing career at the age of 17. He holds an associate’s degree in dance, performance, and choreography and a postgraduate diploma in arts education from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts in Kingston, Jamaica. Johnnoy is currently producing his first documentary, an intimate look at the Jamaican matriarch of concert dance, Ivy Baxter. This interest led him to the New York Film Academy, where he earned a certificate in documentary filmmaking.

The Church was established in 2019 by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik. Housed in a deconsecrated 19th-century church, its doors were opened in April 2021. Our mission is to foster creativity and to honor the living history of Sag Harbor as a maker village. The East End represents an exceptional artistic legacy, spanning the practices of indigenous art of several centuries ago, Abstract Expressionists of the mid-20th century, and the many celebrated writers, makers, musicians, and visual artists of the recent past and current moment. Core programming includes visual art exhibitions, concerts and events, educational programming, workshops, lectures, and an artist’s residency.
