Violinist and composer Michelle Ross invites you to join us at The Church for a behind-the-scenes look into her creative practice and unique process of composing. During this special event, Michelle will offer insight into her latest composition – an in-progress piece for solo violin and mixed ensemble – and discuss how improvisation, electronics, handwritten notations, poetry, and performance all play a role in her work. The presentation will feature a selection of handwritten scores, excerpts of audio, and a live performance by Michelle.
A protégée of the legendary violinist Itzhak Perlman, Michelle’s compositions have had world premieres at the Lucerne Festival, Tanglewood Music Center, and Oregon Symphony’s Open Music. She has also performed as guest concertmaster with a range of ensembles including the Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, London Symphony Orchestra, and more.

Michelle Ross
Michelle Barzel Ross is a Mizrahi-American violinist and composer of uncommon gifts and deep curiosity, whose artistry defies categorization. A protégée of the legendary Itzhak Perlman, last season Michelle had the honor of touring as guest first violinist with the Juilliard String Quartet, and with Avi Avital and the Between Worlds Ensemble. Known for her debut album, pop-up project and blog Discovering Bach: Complete Sonatas and Partitas of J.S. Bach (Albany Records), Michelle recently released Vivaldi: Four Seasons (Epidemic Sound) with conductor Eric Jacobsen and the Odyssey Orchestra. Passionate about expanding the bounds of contemporary music as both a creator and performer, Ross is a member of Ensemble Échappé, a guest with International Contemporary Ensemble, co-curator of Lucerne Festival Forward, and faculty at Lucerne Festival Contemporary. Ross holds degrees from the Juilliard School and Columbia University.

THE CHURCH
The Church was established in 2019 by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik. Housed in a deconsecrated 19th-century church, its doors were opened in April 2021. Our mission is to foster creativity and to honor the living history of Sag Harbor as a maker village. The East End represents an exceptional artistic legacy, spanning the practices of indigenous art of several centuries ago, Abstract Expressionists of the mid-20th Century, and the many celebrated writers, makers, musicians, and visual artists of the recent past and current moment. Core programming includes visual art exhibitions, concerts and events, educational programming, workshops, lectures, and an artist’s residency.
