The Church Welcomes
HERB SAMBOL to the Board
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Church is thrilled to announce the addition of Herb Sambol to our board of directors. Sambol serves alongside Eric Fischl, April Gornik, Moisés Cerdas, Jeremy Dennis, Nicole Seligman, Sally Susman, Dini von Mueffling, Howard Marks, and Rob Masella. We welcome his unique expertise, philanthropic mindset, and love for the East End as we move forward.
HERB SAMBOL was born in Brooklyn, New York, grew up on the Jersey Shore, and attended Oberlin College, graduating in 1977. After college, Herb worked in several congressional offices in Washington, D.C., and also in campaign management and voter outreach.
Herb left Washington to start a career in real estate and hospitality and for the last 25 years has had the opportunity to pursue a variety of interests, including infrastructure development, architectural and historic preservation, and environmental management.
Herb has been a regular presence on the South Fork for the last 20 years and a resident of Sag Harbor for the last ten. A member of the Village of Sag Harbor’s Harbor Committee, Herb is also on the board of several nonprofits, including the Citizens Committee for New York City and the Dawgpatch Bandits.
He is on the advisory board of GallopNYC, which offers therapeutic riding services for underprivileged children and returning veterans, and is an executive director of the Sambol Family Foundation, which supports a wide range of philanthropic interests including wildlife preservation and disaster relief.
The Church was established in 2019 by artists Eric Fischl and April Gornik. Housed in a deconsecrated 19th-century church, its doors were opened in April 2021. Our mission is to foster creativity and to honor the living history of Sag Harbor as a maker village. The East End represents an exceptional artistic legacy, spanning the practices of indigenous art of several centuries ago, Abstract Expressionists of the mid-20th century, and the many celebrated writers, makers, musicians, and visual artists of the recent past and current moment. Core programming includes visual art exhibitions, concerts and events, educational programming, workshops, lectures, and an artist’s residency.
