Conservation Connections:

From Governor’s Island to Shelter Island with the New York Harbor School

————

In early October, seven students and four accompanying teachers from the NY Harbor School on Governor’s Island in New York Harbor traded their busy urban island for quiet Shelter Island. The eye-opening immersive field experience at Mashomack gave the Marine Policy and Affairs students great insight into the complexities of conservation. They waded into marshes, learned about coastal ecosystems and nesting shorebirds, oyster reef biodiversity and much more. Parallels were drawn between their on-campus urban farming with Sylvester Manor Educational Farm where they worked with farm manager, Arielle Gardner to learn about local sustainable farming practices while helping with the harvest. Students also put some sweat equity into an oyster shell recycling program with Kate Rossi-Snook of Cornell Cooperative Extension. The partnership between the Harbor School and TNC is an excellent example of how organizations can work together to promote youth in conservation.
