Tripoli Gallery is pleased to announce this year’s Artist-in-Residence, Sage Schachter. Turning the main exhibition space of the gallery into his studio, Sage is completing a new body of work, some of his largest paintings to date. Celebrating the completion of the residency and the beginning of a new series of paintings and sculptures, Park Life will open with a reception on Saturday, April 18th from 6 – 8pm at 26 Ardsley Road in Wainscott, NY and will remain on view until May 11th, 2026.
In the worn surfaces of Tompkins Square Park and its surrounding East Village of New York, Sage finds a jungle of discovery and console; in the cracked pavement, peeling paint, stained walls and streets, images appear, existence is observed, and inspiration is found.
“Suggestions of forms, figures, and color formations emerge, formed not by intention but by the slow accumulation of events. These unintended images function as a kind of urban cave art, anonymous compositions shaped collectively by decay, chance, and the passage of time rather than by a single author,” Sage says.
In Park Life, Sage Schachter invites the viewer to look at what is often overlooked with a newfound sense of wonder. With the use of colors akin to those that emerge through the accumulation of time, Sage paints the history of these hidden places. Pairing digital images of found compositions and textures, like the stone surfaces indigenous cultures would portray their narritives on, Sage’s subjects inhabit Tompkins Square Park, home to a wide range of personalities, energies and modern day narratives.
“They echo the earliest cave paintings, which often emerged from the natural contours of the stone they were made upon. Color and atmosphere shift according to the mood surrounding each moment of observation, transforming fragments of the environment into images that hover between portrait, abstraction, and landscape,” Sage reflects.
Alongside the paintings, the concept extends to classic New York City style park benches, engraved with fragments of memory from the park, creating a sense of the outdoors within the gallery.
