DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE

———————

Dear Friends,

We have always considered the Yale University Art Gallery a home—to our collection, to our colleagues and friends, and for our many programs and events. Now that most of us are isolating in our actual homes due to the pandemic, I’m reminded of the perpetual relevance of great art created by people of many cultures over the millennia.

While the Gallery remains closed, we continue to bring this art to our audiences in multiple ways and hope you’ve been enjoying this weekly newsletter and its sampling of our collections and digital resources. This week’s edition offers access to three new online experiences:

My colleagues and I celebrate the bravery and dedication of those who are sacrificing for the greater good. We see this sacrifice firsthand here at Yale, and even among our Gallery employees. We thank them all.

I send you wishes for good health and spirits, and invite you to send me in return your ideas and questions at yuagdirector@yale.edu.

Warmly,

Stephanie Wiles
The Henry J. Heinz II Director

WATCH

Richard Benson’s
“The Printed Picture” Lecture Series

Enjoy this YouTube playlist in which the late Richard “Chip” Benson (1943–2017)–photographer, master printer, longtime Yale professor, and dean of the Yale School of Art–traces the dominant technologies used for printing pictures throughout the modern era, from relief prints to digital printing processes.
————————

Benson delivered these talks in the galleries at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, in 2008. They were presented in conjunction with the exhibition The Printed Picture (October 17, 2008–July 13, 2009), which Benson cocurated with Peter Galassi, former Chief Curator of Photography at the Museum of Modern Art.
