Plans for Watermill Artist Residence
A simple abstraction of a traditional barn form, the Watermill Artist Residence is designed to specifically relate to the rural environment in which it is placed. Providing housing for artists of Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center Laboratory for Performance in Water Mill, the residence’s minimalist design features a simple gable-shaped volume with glass facades. Sunken courtyards promote artist collaboration and socialization, while also doubling as performance space where onlookers can enjoy the performance art below. Glass facades and a glass skylight allow for natural light, while monolithic material extends from the roof down the sides of the volume in a minimalist gesture.
