Inspired by an Icon
In 2021, East End Arts teamed up with a number of local high school arts classes and clubs with the idea of unity through artistic collaboration by creating mosaic portraits of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Through the MLK Portrait Project, students unleash their creativity to create individual 16 panels that come together in communion to create a 48″ x 48″ mosaic portrait of MLK. Each school created unique depictions with a common theme.
Students deep dive into the life and impact of their selected muse, learning how the power of the individual is amplified in the community. Combing the individual panels of each piece together to create a unified mosaic and then bringing all the mosaics together to create a unified exhibition [day & location to be announced], demonstrate the power of unity through artistic collaboration.
Since then, the portraits have expanded to include civil rights leaders throughout American history. Please enjoy this year’s selection of 13 portraits, created by 11 local high schools. Artwork is currently on display at the individual schools, coming together at a public location in February. Each piece is for sale, with proceeds going to the EEA art and music scholarship fund.
