Riverhead — East End Arts & Humanities Council, Inc. (EEA) presents a gallery conversation between artist Anne Sherwood Pundyk and industry producer, curator, and writer Jill Brienza Saturday, April 27th at 1:00 p.m. as part of the programming for ‘Beauty Out of Bounds’, EEA’s current solo exhibition with Pundyk, on view through May 5, 2024.

In this gallery talk, Anne and Jill delve into their common belief that art is rooted in personal experience and likewise can impact the audience on a personal level. In her 30 years as a producer, curator and writer, Jill has always supported the artists’ perspective.

“When I [work with] an artist, I want them to really push the limits,” she said early in her career. Anne and Jill have grown a friendship over 20 years around experiencing art on a direct, subjective level. Jill’s projects have taken her around the world, while she has maintained her long-time roots on Shelter Island. Their mutual connection to the North Fork has allowed an intimate exchange about the intersection of art-making, the art world, and our current-day challenges.

The talk takes place at EEA’s 11 West Gallery [11 W. Main St.], Riverhead, against the background of Pundyk’s large-scale abstract paintings on unstretched canvas. Guests are encouraged to reserve a seat online through Eventbrite.

About the Panelists:

An artist and writer, Anne Sherwood Pundyk brings together the traditions of abstract art, textiles and storytelling. Activated by color, her unstretched paintings are constructed from stained, cropped and sewn sections of drop cloth canvas. Elements of her studio work link directly to her photographs, artist’s books, writing and performance pieces. Based in New York, Pundyk has engaged in her art making, exhibiting and art writing over the last 35 years. She relocated her studio to the North Fork ten years ago.

Jill Brienza is a curator, producer and writer based in New York City and Shelter Island, NY. Brienza is widely considered the pre-eminent expert on the work of Alan Shields and curated Alan Shields: A Survey, a traveling museum exhibition of Shields’ work, among other exhibitions and special projects. She has written on contemporary art for such publications as Flash Art and Art Basel Magazine. Brienza has worked with corporate clients on the development of art-related projects. For over ten years, Brienza was the director of an acclaimed contemporary art gallery in midtown Manhattan presenting a multidisciplinary program that showcased works by artists such as Peter Fend, architect Ken Smith and playwright/performer Sarah Jones. She serves as Co-chair of Hunter College’s Art Advisory Board. For Hunter, she curated Robert Longo’s American Bridge Project, a large scale public art exhibit. She is the long-time Chair of the Stephen Petronio Dance Company, and has previously been on the boards of Creative Time and Independent Curators International.

Beauty out of Bounds is on display through May 5 across EEA’s two galleries, a five-minute walk apart, in the Arts District of downtown Riverhead. The galleries are free and open to the public. The EEA Main Gallery is located at 133 E. Main St., Riverhead. The 11 West Gallery is located at 11 W. Main St., Peconic Crossing, Riverhead. Gallery hours are:

Thursdays 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Fridays 2 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Saturdays 12 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Sundays 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.
