Riverhead, NY — The closing event for artist and writer Anne Sherwood Pundyk’s solo exhibition at East End Arts [EEA], Beauty Out of Bounds,’ is a unique Rites of Spring Music Festival [ROS] performance titled Strange and Wonderful.’ This marks the third installment of the ‘Sounds of Images’ series, performance art conceptualized and produced by ROS founder and Artistic Director Paolo Bartolani. “‘Sounds of Images’ is not merely a concert in a gallery. It is curated as a conversation between visual arts and music,” he explains. This event includes collaborative works by Pundyk and cellist and composer Mariel Roberts.

Based on Pundyk’s artist’s book ‘The Garden,’ about family loss and acceptance, the performance intertwines women’s voices reading stories from the book with Roberts’ electronic and acoustic improvisations on cello. Pundyk’s large, colorful abstract unstretched canvas paintings form the backdrop for the performance in the EEA 11 West Gallery. Staged as an immersive, theatre-in-the-round experience, Roberts and the readers move and encircle the audience throughout the one-hour piece.

This is event is open to the public. Tickets should be purchased in advance here as space is limited.

The participants:

Artist and writer Anne Sherwood Pundyk brings together the traditions of abstract art, textiles and storytelling. Activated by color, her unstretched paintings are constructed from stained, cropped and sewn sections of drop cloth canvas. Elements of her studio work link directly to her photographs, artist’s books, writing and performance pieces. Based in New York, Pundyk has engaged in her art making, exhibiting and art writing over the last 35 years. She relocated her studio to the North Fork ten years ago. Curator Helen A. Harrison observed, “…[Pundyk’s] work suggests that understanding requires another interpretive tool, or perhaps a personal surrender to a deeper, less accessible, level of cognition.” The move has been the catalyst for a fundamental re-centering of her art around adapting everyday forms with an eye toward questioning convention. annesherwoodpundyk.com @anne.sherwood.pundyk

American cellist and composer Mariel Roberts is widely recognized for her virtuosic performances and as a “fearless explorer” in her field (Chicago Reader). Her deep commitment to collaboration and experimentation as an interpreter, improvisor, and composer have helped create a body of work which bridges avant-garde, contemporary, classical, improvised, and traditional music. Roberts is widely recognized for her “technical and interpretive mastery” and for performances which seethe with “excruciating intensity”. Learn more at marielroberts.com
