I’m delighted we’re kicking off the 16th season of Marine Explorers later this month. During this hands-on program at the Marine Museum, kids learn maritime history, environmental studies, and water safety, and explore a variety of art mediums. I’m especially happy that Ryder Nadel, a second grader at Amagansett School who is attending his third year of Marine Explorers, will join artists like Scott Bluedorn, Janet Jennings, Rory McNish, Tim Regan, Bill Stewart, and Mark Wilson by exhibiting his work at the Marine Museum this month.

Entitled Found: A Series of Collections from Our Beaches, the exhibition features objects that Ryder discovered on East End beaches. Since he was a preschooler, he and his dad, Lee, have fished, hiked, and walked our beaches, finding trash and treasure everywhere. These jaunts sparked Ryder’s interest in conservation and at age four, he decided he didn’t want to have balloons at his birthday again. Marine Explorers also played an important role in spurring Ryder’s appreciation for marine life and the East End’s beaches. Picking up trash also led to the discovery of beautiful things in neglected places. This dichotomy is the essence of this show: from trash to treasure, from new to old and new again, from waste to conservation, from lost to found.
Thanks to Stacy Myers, Director of Education at the Historical Society, for working with Ryder and his parents to curate the exhibition. I hope you’ll join us for the exhibition’s opening reception tomorrow, Thursday, June 6 from 4 to 5:30pm at the Marine Museum. Photography Exhibition at Clinton Academy
Opening Sunday, June 9, 2-6 PM

In the exhibition, entitled 40 years of Photography, Rory MacNish’s photographs and videography present his decades-long understanding of the light of the East End with scenes from land and sea. Growing up in the community, Rory developed a sense of the landscape and natural world, and his artwork captures the farming, fishing, and landscapes of the North and South Forks of Long Island.

Starts later this month!

Join our Marine Explorers Summer Program, a hands-on educational program exploring maritime history, environmental studies, water safety, and a variety of art mediums.
Program Dates:
- June 24-28 (Ages 6-8)
- July 15-19 (Ages 9-12)
- August 5-9 (Ages 9-12)
Duration: Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Cost Per Student: $800/week

Hats Off: 300 Years of Headwear in East Hampton
Exhibition opening next month!

Anna Muller, Curator of Collections at the Historical Society is developing an exhibition entitled, Hats Off: 300 Years of Headwear in East Hampton. Thanks to her research, we discovered that the store of Van Scoy & Dayton (later known as Van Scoy, Dayton & Stratton) at 69 Main Street, opened a millinery department in early 1897. The following year, they posted an advertisement in the East Hampton Star announcing that “our trimmer, Miss Tydings” was ready to take orders for ladies’ headwear. As Anna noted, the rise of the department store reflected a new way for local East Hampton residents to acquire their hats. Rather than home industry or mail order, a person could go to Van Scoy & Dayton and either purchase some “ready mades,” or hire a milliner like Miss Tydings, who appeared to work seasonally at the store, commuting between East Hampton and New York City.

Due to inclement weather on May 23, our Golf Outing was rescheduled, which means there’s still time to play one of America’s premier golf courses while helping to support the East Hampton Historical Society.
Check-in and lunch begin at 11:30am. The Shotgun Start is between 1 and 1:30pm with a reception and awards ceremony following your round.

This year’s Honorary Chairs are Anthony Ingrao and Randy Kemper, the principals of Ingrao, the internationally recognized design and architecture firm.
