Hallockville Museum Farm Announces

Spring Series of Guided Historical Walking Tours

East End agricultural, natural and cultural history will be the focus of four guided walking tours to be offered this spring at Hallockville Museum Farm, a 28-acre preserved North Fork farm homestead in Riverhead. The tours will cover a range of topics including barn architecture from the 18^th to the 20^th centuries, local tree species, antique farm equipment and medicinal uses of plants. Admission to the walking tours is free for Hallockville members and $10 for the general public. Registration may be completed online at https://hallockville.org/walkingtours/.

Barn Architecture of the North Fork

Saturday, April 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The series kicks off on Saturday, April 13 with Barn Architecture of the North Fork, led by Zach Studenroth, an expert on historic buildings and their preservation, and local historian, Richard Wines. Participants will tour Hallockville’s pre-revolutionary Homestead Barn and the 1937 Naugles Barn, learning about the form and function of each structure and how barn architecture evolved to meet the changing needs of North Fork farmers.

Native Trees of the East End

Saturday, May 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Retired federal park ranger and naturalist Mary Laura Lamont will lead the second walk on May 11, Native Trees of the East End. Participants will examine tree buds, fruits, barks and leaves and learn to spot the differences and identifying traits of trees. Hands-on inspection of wood samples will reveal the differences between the weights and colors of various woods. Participants will also learn about how specific woods have been used by people through the ages.

Historical Farm Equipment

Saturday, June 1 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The third walk on June 1 will take a close look at the Historical Farm Equipment at Hallockville, and the critical role that mechanization had in the modernization of farming methods. Agricultural expert Dale Moyer and historian Richard Wines will lead a tour of the Hallockville grounds and barns and explain how the early farm equipment worked, how it made its way to Hallockville and a farmer’s modern-day equivalent.

Plants are Good Medicine

Saturday, June 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

The final program in the Historic Walking Tour series will be Plants are Good Medicine! on Saturday, June 22. Certified nutritional counselor, hobby farmer and homesteader, Toni Caste, will lead a tour of the Hallockville campus exploring gardens, pathways, nooks and crannies for plants that have beneficial, medicinal uses. This program will give participants a new perspective on plants commonly called weeds.
