PARRISH ART MUSEUM AWARDED $25,000 ART WORKS GRANT FROM

THE NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE ARTS IN SUPPORT OF THE EXHIBITION

“KEITH SONNIER: UNTIL TODAY”

—————————————-

The award is granted for projects that demonstrate exceptional aesthetic investigation and meaningful community engagement

The Parrish Art Museum was awarded a $25,000 Art Works grant from National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to support the publication and exhibition Keith Sonnier: Until Today, the first American museum survey in 35 years of the work of the Louisiana-born artist, on view at the Museum from July 1, 2018 – January 27, 2019. The guidelines for Art Works, the NEA’s principal grants program, state, “The National Endowment for the Arts is committed to supporting museum activity that demonstrates exceptional aesthetic investigation and meaningful community engagement.” Grants are awarded to projects that are likely to prove transformative with the potential for meaningful change; are distinctive, offering fresh insights and new value for their fields and/or the public through unconventional solutions; and have the potential to be shared and/or emulated.

Keith Sonnier: Until Today epitomizes a core component of the Museum’s mission to foster connections between art, artists, and the community. In addition to the exhibition and publication, the Parrish has created a wide-reaching variety of education and public programs to further the engagement with this influential artist and his work. Organized by the Museum’s guest curator Jeffrey Grove and Parrish director Terrie Sultan, the exhibition will travel to the New Orleans Museum of Art following the Parrish presentation. This support of the exhibition marks the Parrish Art Museum’s sixth grant from the NEA, including the recent awards of $20K in 2015 for the Ladd Brothers exhibition, and $60K in 2013 in support of the Permanent Collection.

“We are deeply grateful to the National Endowment for the Arts for this generous and significant award in support of the exhibition and publication dedicated to the seminal American artist Keith Sonnier,” said Parrish Art Museum Director Terrie Sultan. “Endorsement from the NEA is vital to the arts—sustaining cultural institutions that exist to bring the arts to light, and strengthening our capacity to provide the community with a range of opportunities for arts participation.”

Keith Sonnier: Until Today exhibition and fully illustrated publication consider the work of the artist, who was a pioneering figure in the emerging fields of conceptual, post minimal, video, and performance art in the 1960s, and who continues to innovate today. The exhibition brings together work from each decade of this iconic artist’s career, including sculpture, drawing, sound pieces, a site-specific neon installation in the Museum’s spine, and recent work, offering an unparalleled opportunity for both the museum-going public and scholarly audience to reexamine and more fully appreciate the central role Sonnier has played in re-defining the parameters of sculpture over the past 50 years. Works from the past two decades illustrate how Sonnier—who has traveled widely in India, Japan, and Indonesia—continues to mine the varied histories and vernacular vocabularies into an inquiry that produces idosyncratic and compelling objects.

Keith Sonnier: Until Today will be used as the basis for inquiry, discussion, and creative production in many of the Parrish’s educational programs. Exhibition themes will be the basis for docent tours, in-class lessons, gallery discussions, studio activities, and as part of the Access Parrish initiative. Youth and children in the Parrish’s on-site Art Camp and off-site community programs will experience the exhibition and develop art work responding to Sonnier’s experimentation with novel materials. Weekly Open Studio sessions for families will engage visitors with the exhibition and provide time to create sculptures in response. In the fall of 2018, children in the Museum’s ongoing school programs (grades pre-K, 4, 5, 6, high school) and in the Parrish’s After School Art Classes will experience units of study based on the exhibition including pre-visit lessons, exploring the exhibition, and related hands-on projects. These programs will reach over 500 students. The public is invited to hear from the artist himself, when Sonnier and Grove present a public conversation. Grove and Sultan will conduct several “Curator’s View” gallery talks throughout the run of the show.

Keith Sonnier: Until Today is made possible, in part, by the generous support of The James and Charlotte Park Brooks Fund; Douglas Baxter; National Endowment for the Arts; Pace Gallery, New York; Barbara Slifka; Compass; Dorothy Lichtenstein; Barbara Bertozzi Castelli; Linda Hackett and Melinda Hackett/ CAL Foundation; The Hamamoto Family; The Evelyn Toll Family Foundation; The Mr. and Mrs. Raymond J.
