~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sylvester Manor ———— The lands of Shelter Island’s Sylvester Manor were home for millennia to indigenous Manhansett People. The 236-acre site is the most intact provisioning plantation remnant and former place of enslavement north of Virginia. The site was home to eleven generations of Sylvester descendants, from 1652 until 2014, when it was gifted to the nonprofit organization Sylvester Manor. Over the past 370 years, Sylvester Manor has been a provisioning plantation, an Enlightenment-era farm, and a pioneering food industrialist’s summer estate. Today, the site includes a 1737 Manor House, a restored 19th-century windmill, an Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground, and a working farm along with educational, history & heritage and cultural arts programs open to all. Sylvester Manor was designated a Historic District of national significance on the National Register of Historic Places in 2015. ———— In the mid-2000s, the Trust began working with the property’s owner, Eben Fiske Ostby and his nephew, Bennett Konesni, to prepare a conservation plan for the historic 240-acre property, much of which has been accomplished with the assistance of the Trust. In December 2009, Mr. Ostby donated a perpetual easement on 22 acres along Gardiners Creek to Peconic Land Trust. In 2012, Suffolk County and the Town of Shelter Island purchased development rights on over 83 acres of the property. ————————————————-
