The beautiful Fairy Dell Boardwalk at the Quogue Wildlife Refuge was rebuilt after being closed for over 7 years, thanks to a generous grant awarded by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation in the amount of $142,778.00. We are so grateful to the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, as this grant not only allowed us to rebuild the much missed boardwalk, but also enabled us to include educational signage about the local history of the area, and flora and fauna along the walk.
The Fairy Dell Boardwalk is a catwalk through beautiful tidal wetlands of the Quogue Wildlife Refuge. It traverses through the historic Fairy Dell Tract along the headwaters of Quantuck Creek and it was in need of reconstruction due to dilapidation and decaying wood. The 1,500 foot long boardwalk overlooks Quantuck Creek at three terminal platforms. The Fairy Dell is the local name for the headwaters of Quantuck Creek. There are signs along the way with information and photos about both the local history of the area, as well as native flora and fauna. Along the walk you may be able to observe various birds, see an osprey nest, and a variety of habitats and plants.
This boardwalk complex was first built over the winter of 1983-84. Over the decades, summer ecology camp kids, guided groups, independent visitors and birders have enjoyed exploring on the Fairy Dell Boardwalk. It is a wonderful teaching spot, a beautiful area to observe wildlife, and encompasses a very different habitat from the main sanctuary property.
We are very thankful to Anthony Bonner & Sea Level Construction for the beautiful work, Quogue & Westhampton Beach Historical Societies for assisting in the historic research of the area, & Land Use Ecological services for donating their time helping us to obtain the proper permits for the boardwalk.
