In the 1980’s an enterprising Shelter Islander, Bill Meringer, set out to document every house on his beloved island. Historic homes, ordinary homes, huge mansions, small cottages – Bill photographed as many as he could. He took notes on their construction, renovations, owners, outbuildings, measurements, and any fun or historic facts he found that would preserve stories of the island’s architecture. Bill’s labor of love has become the Shelter Island Historical Society’s House Registry.

But today’s island looks much different than it did forty years ago when Bill commenced this project.
Now the Historical Society is calling on all Shelter Islanders to help preserve our history by contributing information about your property to the House Registry. We have an online form to fill out, which will allow you to fill in details and add photos of your home. It’s all easy – and free! As we say on our website, our goal is to register every home/building on Shelter Island to benefit future researchers and historians.
We look forward to adding your house to our archives soon, and thank you in advance!
